Zimbabwe’s most assured batting performance was insufficient to compete with India’s new IPL stars, Jaiswal and Gill. The two stars breezed through a 153-run target in only 15.2 overs. Both put on a stunning display of intent-laden batting unlike anything seen in the series so far.
Whereas Zimbabwe hit only 10 fours in their 20 overs, Jaiswal and Gill smacked as many in their first four overs. This ensured a ten-wicket thrashing that gave India an unbeatable 3-1 lead with one more game to play on Sunday.
Before this game, Zimbabwe had lost at least two wickets in the powerplay in all three T20Is in the series. Wessly Madhevere and Tadiwanashe Marumani, on the other hand, rode their luck and scored 63 in 8.4 overs, giving them a solid foundation.
Jaiswal and Gill’s Efforts to Restrict ZIM
Marumani was dropped by Shivam Dube at mid-on in the third over while on three runs. He also profited from an overthrow of the boundary in the same over.
And Marumani appeared to shift gears following the reprieve by targeting rookie Tushar Deshpande, who gave 21 runs in his first two overs. Gill promptly resorted to spin during the powerplay, and they were able to keep the scoring under control.
Eventually, an attempt to boost the ante against India‘s part-time bowlers, who needed to satisfy the fifth bowler’s quota, resulted in Marumani. He attempted a pull off Abhishek Sharma’s fourth ball and ended up hitting it to the farthest portion of the boundary, where Rinku Singh was waiting at deep midwicket.
This allowed Jaiswal and Gill to bring in Dube from the other end to complete the fifth bowler’s quota, but he, too, struck. In his first over, he had the other set batsman. Madhevere, pull a short ball to Rinku at deep square leg.
Abhishek might have had a second wicket in T20Is if Ruturaj Gaikwad hadn’t saved Brian Bennett with a dolly at extra cover. However, the wasted chance did not come at a high cost for India.
